We went over back over the Quick Lab, “Genetic Evidence for Evolution” together in class. For reinforcement, we talked about DNA and all of the things that we use DNA for these days, including providing molecular evidence for relatedness of organisms. We looked again at the sequence of DNA given for 6 species of animal and used those sequences to reinforce which species were most related to each other and how the DNA sequences told us that information. Then, using what we learned, we created a phylogenetic, “Tree of Life” that diagramed the relatedness of each species and its relationships to other species in the group. WeREWORKED THE PHYLOGENETIC TREE SINCE STUDENTS HAD A HARD TIME WITH THAT PART OF THE LAB YESTERDAY. Students were instructed revise their labs and to turn the lab in on Google Classroom for a grade today. We also reviewed and reinforces the purpose of the lab, “Comparing Anatomy,” another type of Evidence for Evolution. Students were reminded to compare the forelimbs of a human, dog, horse, bat, bird, and seal only to discover the the structures of the anatomy of the forelimbs of all 6 organisms are homologous, and therefore, imply relatedness through a common ancestor belonging to all 6 organisms. Students were re-instructed to choose one organism, draw its anatomic forelimb, color code and label each bone, and compare the drawing to the other 5 organism’s forelimbs. They should realize through this activity that homologous structures indicate relatedness while function is often very different. Function does not indicate relatedness! All 6 species had structurally similar forelimbs, but their functions were different! Homologous structure, not analogous structure indicates relatedness! We focused on how to answer question #4 and to make sure and end with the statement previous to this above! Next, the teacher summarized Unit 1, Lesson 4, “The History of Life on Earth while students followed in their textbooks. They were reminded that their homework was to complete Unit 1, “Life over Time,” Lesson 4: “The History of Life on Earth,”pp. 38-48 COMPLETE Lesson Questions 1-21 and Lesson Review Questions, p. 49, Questions 1-8. Due: FRIDAY, 5/8/20 and Study for a QUIZ over Unit 1, Lessons #3 and #4 on Monday, 5/11/20. Class ended. students were instructed to revise and re submit their labs activities to Google Classroom TODAY. I told them all good-bye, I loved them, and to have a great day. I told them to come to “Open Session” tomorrow if they had questions or just wanted to work on their labs and visit. Otherwise, I would see them on Friday. Daily Recap 5/4/20: Today went well. We went over the Quick Lab, “Genetic Evidence for Evolution” together in class after discussing Lesson 3, “Evidence for Evolution.” We talked about DNA and all of the things that we use DNA for these days, including providing molecular evidence for relatedness of organisms. We looked at the sequence of DNA given for 6 species of animal and used those sequences to determine which species were most related to each other and how the DNA sequences told us that information. Then, using what we learned, we created a phylogenetic, “Tree of Life” that diagramed the relatedness of each species and its relationships to other species in the group. Students were instructed to turn the lab in on Google Classroom for a grade. We went over the instructions for another lab assignment, “Comparing Anatomy,” another type of Evidence for Evolution. Students were instructed to compare the forelimbs of a human, dog, horse, bat, bird, and seal only to discover the the structures of the anatomy of the forelimbs of all 6 organisms are homologous, and therefore, imply relatedness through a common ancestor belonging to all 6 organisms. Students were told to choose one organism, draw its anatomic forelimb, color code and label each bone, and compare their drawing to the other 5 organism’s forelimbs. They should realize through this activity that homologous structures indicate relatedness while function is often very different. Function does not indicate relatedness! All 6 species had structurally similar forelimbs, but their functions were different! Homologous structure, not analogous structure indicates relatedness! Class ended. students were instructed to work on their labs activities and have them ready to turn in to Google Classroom on Wednesday. I told them all good-bye, I loved them, and to have a great day. I told them to come to “Open Session” tomorrow if they had questions or just wanted to work on their labs and visit. WEEK OF 4/27/20-5/1/20 Daily Recap 5/1/20: Today was a wonderful day for class. No storm, internet working well, beautiful day outside, and so happy to see my students on a regularly scheduled class day! Classes started with me taking attendance while greeting all of my students - a very happy moment. Before we started class, we talked again about turning assignments in to Google Classroom. We discussed some of the things the “Guide to Google Classroom” told us like, “It takes time to SAVE a document so WAIT before you turn it in to make sure it saves or you will be sending a blank assignment. We also talked about how the document would look when it was first opened. It would say the student’s name and the name of the assignment. When it was ready to turn in, it would say, “Edited,” the student’s name, and the name of the assignment. It would have turned from black ink to gray if it was saved and ready to turn in. If students did not see “Edited” first before their name, they had done something wrong and to go back to the Guide to Google Classroom to see what it was because they would be turning in a blank assignment otherwise. We have been having a lot of those being turned in like that - blank! We went over Unit 1, Lessons 1 and 2, discussed “Introduction to Living Things” and “Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection” tying in the Quick Lab, ‘Is a Clock Alive?” when we discussed the (5) things something has to be or be able to do to be considered alive. At that point, we were ready to take our quiz over Unit 1, Lessons 1 and 2. Students went to Google Classroom and began to take their quizzes. Some completed them before the class was over. Some will complete them after class today. They are due today by 6:00 p.m. At the end of class, I instructed students to make sure they completed Unit 1, Lesson 3 before Monday since is was due this morning and they have had 2 days to complete it on Google Classroom. Their homework is a Quick Lab that goes with lesson 3, “Genetic Evidence for Evolution.” I told them good-bye, I loved them, to have a great weekend, and I would see them on Monday! Class ended. Daily Recap 4/29/20: I want to apologize to all of you for being out again today. There really was nothing I could do about it. My internet was fixed on Monday afternoon and worked great for "Open Session" yesterday. This morning, the winds from the storms caused HUGE outages all over Sugar Land and Missouri City and I was one of those unfortunate people. My electricity was out from 5:00a.m. until 11:50 p.m. and that included my home internet! This is what we are going to do to catch up: 1. You should have Unit 1, Lesson 1, Unit 2, Lesson 2, and "Is a Clock Alive" completely finished and turned in. You should have Tuesday's TASK CARD complete and ready to go over in class. Please see The Weebly, the Lesson Plan, and Google Classroom for all of these assignments. If you have not completed those assignments, have them completed and "turned in" by the end of Thursday. That will catch you up to tonight. Tonight's homework is to read and complete Unit 1, Lesson 3, "Evidence of Evolution." Please see the Weebly and the Lesson Plan. I will post it on Google Classroom today for those who would rather or need to do it there. You know who you are. Complete Thursday's Task Card and have it ready to go over Friday as stated on the Weebly and the Lesson Plan. If your assignments are up-to-date, you have only to do Unit 1, Lesson 3 Questions and Review Questions. I will post the answers to Unit 1, Lesson 2 and Unit 1, Lesson 3 (tomorrow morning on the WEEBLY) for you to check your answers. ON FRIDAY, I will explain the main ideas and concepts for Lesson 1, lesson 2, and "Is a Clock Alive." Then, you will go to Google Classroom and take your Unit 1, Lesson 1 and Lesson 2 QUIZ and 'TURN IT IN" on Google Classroom. The QUIZ DUE DATE AND TIME will be posted on Google Classroom. While you are taking your QUIZ on Friday, I will upload the answers to Lesson 3 Questions (ON THE WEEBLY.) You can check them sometime that a day and "Turn them In" to Google Classroom. This seems like a lot, but if you have been keeping up with your assignments, you only need to do Lesson 3 and Thursday's TASK CARD on tomorrow. Your homework for the weekend is on the Lesson Plan and the Weebly. You will do the Quick Lab that goes with Lesson 3 and it will be due on Monday, 5/4/20 as stated on the Weebly and Lesson Plan. This catches us up. THANK YOU ALL AGAIN, STUDENTS AND PARENTS. MOTHER NATURE CANNOT BE BEATEN! When you look at these assignments alongside the Weebly, Lesson Plans, and Google Classroom, you will see that the only items that should be having to be done now are Lesson 3 (tonight's homework), Thursday's TASK CARD (Tomorrow's assignment) and Friday's homework (Weekend assignment). It has been very stressful for me to be away from my students. I hope you are all well. I miss you and will see you on Friday. Please surprise me and have your work ready. That would make me soooo happy and I would not be stressed anymore! Love you all. Mrs. Murchison. Daily Recap 4/27/20: Today was another very challenging day. Once again, my internet was down most of the day, beginning early this morning, which caused me to have to miss my 7th grade classes entirely! Thanks to Mrs. Rashid, once again, my students did not miss a step! She took my lessons and instructions and sent my students an email. The best part about the day, however, was the fact that Xfinity got my internet fixed!!!! Hopefully, we are done with internet issues. The assignment today was to complete their Universe test on Goggle Classroom if they had not yet done so. We were not able to go over the Friday homework assignment, "Is a Clock Alive," using scientific knowledge of what it means to "be alive," but we will do that on Wednesday. Students were to READ“The Diversity of Living Things:”/Unit 1 “Life over Time”, Lesson 2, “Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection,” pp. 14-24 and complete the lesson questions, 1-24 as well as the Lesson Review, p. 25, Questions 1-9. They should have that ready to discuss on Wednesday. After the discussion, they will take a short qUIZ Wednesday over Lessons #1 and #2. MONDAY: unit_1_lesson_1__22introduction_to_living_things_22_.pdf (KEY) quick_lab_is_a_clock_alive_.pdf Homework: READ“The Diversity of Living Things:”/Unit 1 “Life over Time”, Lesson 2, ““Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection,” pp. 14-24 and complete the lesson questions, 1-24. Complete the Lesson Review, p. 25, Questions 1-9. Due: 4/29/20 unit_1_lesson_2__22theory_of_evolution_by_natural_selection_22.pdf (KEY) TUESDAY: Homework: Have Lesson 2 above completed. Complete Tuesday's TASK CARD! Due: 4/29/20 WEDNESDAY: Homework: Unit 1, Lesson 3, “Evidence of Evolution” pp. 28-36, Questions 1-18 (#4: Underline the definitions of the vocabulary term: fossil and fossil record.) Lesson Review, p. 37, Questions 1-9. COMPLETED. Due: FRIDAY, 5/1/20 THURSDAY: Have Lesson 3 above completed. Due: FRIDAY, 5/1/20 FRIDAY: Unit 1, Lesson 1 and Lesson 2 QUIZ: unit_1_lesson_1_and_2_quiz.pdf unit_1_lesson_3__22evidence_of_evolution_22.pdf (KEY) Complete the LAB “Genetic Evidence for Evolution.” quick_lab_genetic_evidence_of_evolution_p._1.pdf quick_lab_genetic_evidence_of_evolution_p._2.pdf Due: MONDAY, 5/4/20 WEEK OF 4/2o/20-4/24/20 Daily Recap 4/24/20: Today was a very challenging day to say the least. My internet was down most of the day, beginning early this morning, which caused me to have to miss my 7th grade classes entirely! (Internet down due to a gateway issue). Thanks to Mrs. Rashid, my students did not miss a step! She took my lessons and instructions and sent my students an email. Their assignment today was to complete their Universe test on Goggle Classroom first. Secondly, and in accordance with the Weebly, they were to answer this question:" What are the (5) characteristics of living things?" If they did not do their homework last night, then they were to read Unit 1, Lesson 1, "Life Over Time, Introduction to Living Things." If they answered that question incorrectly, after reading the lesson, they were to go back and re-answer it! If they did not read and complete the lesson questions and review questions for homework last evening, they were supposed to do it by 8:00 tonight and turn it in in Google Classroom (THIS AND ANOTHER ASSIGNMENT FOR THE WEEKEND ARE NOW ON GOOGLE CLASSROOM). Finally, after completing the lesson, they are to complete the Quick Lab, "Is a Clock Alive." (ON GOOGLE CLASSROOM). They will use a clock and will compare the clock to the information they learned in lesson 1 about living things to explain Why a clock is or is not alive. THEY MUST USE SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE TO MAKE THAT DETERMINATION JUST AS SCIENTISTS DO EVERYTIME THEY DISCOVER A NEW OBJECT AND HAVE TO DETERMINE IF IT IS LIVING OR NOT - NOT AS EASY AS IT SOUNDS!!!! Daily Recap 4/22/20: Students began taking their Universe test today in class using the "Student/Parent Guide to Google Classroom" and followed the set-by-step instructions in the guide to navigate Google Classroom. They did not complete their test, but were not expected to since this is a program that they are just learning to use. They saved their work and will be able to go back to the test and resume answering questions tonight and tomorrow. They have been given until Friday to get the test completed and "TURNED IN" in Google Classroom. Parents, the GUIDE is set up to assist you as well with how your children use the program. There are also TIPS for parents and students at the end of the slide show to help you and your student as you learn to navigate a new, on-line program the should make completing and turning in assignments easier while we continue our Distance Learning program. Daily Recap 4/20/20: Students completed a warm-up question while I took attendance. We went over the warm-up. The first major thing we did was get all students in each class to join their Science, Google Classroom. We were 100% successful. Then, we went to Dolphin Days and read through the Google Classroom Guide. I also loaded it onto my Weebly under Monday and we went there to show all students they had two places to get the Guide. I showed students the uploaded Jeopardy Games to play with their parents, brother, sister, etc. as they studied for their Universe Tests on Wednesday. I reminded students to have their review ready to turn in on Wednesday for (5) bonus points on their tests. I reminded students about “Open Session” tomorrow if they wanted to come to work on their reviews and as questions. I will upload the REVIEW ANSWERS to the weekly tomorrow night so they can check their answers as they study. They will take their Universe tests in Google classroom on Wednesday and will have until 11:59 p.m. Friday night to turn it in. Since this is their 1st time to complete an assignment in google classroom, I wanted to give them time to use the Google Classroom guide to locate their tests, complete them, and save and turn them in correctly. Class ended. I told them good-bye, that I loved them, and I would either see them in “open Session” tomorrow or on Wednesday ready to take their tests.
